Design Idea of Xi’an MOCA
The ancient city Xi’an, though with a history of seven thousand years experiencing the glory of Han and Tang Dynasties, is surrounded by pseudo-culture. A few historical remains and abundant fake antiques are mixed in a regular modern city structure full of symbols. As a travel city second to Beijing and Shanghai, Xi’an’s tolerance, not only to artists or scholars, but to citizens, and information is too limited like any simple medium inland city.

In Beijing, when a city’s historical buildings are gradually disappearing, it’s hard to restore the history through reconstruction due to the fact that the historical remains are lost and new styles have not been formed. The use of fake antiques and various regional elements became a challenge when Mr. Cheng Dapeng  was deciding the design elements for Xi'an MOCA.

The modern art of Xi’an, though still weak, is important to the city’s restoration breaking through the deep and heavy traditional burdens.

Unlike traditional art gallery and museum, MOCA is very open and inclusive. As an open public space centralizing the city’s spirit, MOCA should be integrated into the public’s consumption system, containing restaurants, tea houses, libraries, multi-functional halls, bookstores, small shops, and broad parks, to assure its openness and effectiveness. An exhibition is a guide to all these public activities. Though with a small size, it should restore partly the city’s life in microsystem levels and get unexpected results through collisions. The contemporary way needs a contemporary constructional language.

In the noisy urbanization, cities become more and more simple and tedious, but the ferment, mutation, or explosion of subtle qualities of this kind of space will, more or less, influence the change of the city that owned the world’s highest civilization.
